Radiation Safety


TARLA contains three shielded enclosures, which will be able to produce prompt ionizing radiation during the facility operations. Those enclosures are; the main accelerator section (LINAC), the free electron laser section (FEL) and Bremsstrahlung beam section. The radiation produced in these caves during an operation may be energetic electrons, X-rays, gamma-rays, neutrons or combinations of the primary and secondary types of radiation. According to the TARLA radiation protection and radiation safety procedure, the doses received in radiation areas can not exceed the limit values stated in the regulations of TAEK (Turkish Atomic Energy Authority). The radiation safety system at TARLA aims to protect staff, researchers, students, visitors and the public from prompt radiation hazards associated with accelerator operations and ensures the prevention of unauthorized entries. TARLA radiation protection and radiation safety procedure also requires limiting and monitoring the exposed doses received outside the shielded sections. One of the important components of TARLA radiation protection and radiation safety concept is to define the environmental radiation levels inside and outside of the facility. TARLA radiation safety concept is discussed under five main headings. They are

  • Environmental radiation measurement; Produced from artificial radiation environment to investigate to what extent is affected.
  • Area monitors; Radiation of the units will be produced (LINAC unit, FEL and Bremsstrahlung room unit) area to be followed,
  • Personal safety; Employees performing their follow-up doses,
  • Contamination monitors; Determination of a possible contamination will occur during the operation,
  • Machine Protection; Units produced radiation comprises protection of the device.
